Bespoke Lampshade - Case Study

One of the things that I love most about crafting is the opportunity to create something bespoke and custom made for a customer.  I love being creative and inventive, however, I get a lot of inspiration from others, and them giving me a taste of their personal style which will quite often go on to influence me in the future!

You may have seen my bespoke lampshade blog post, which talks all about how I can create bespoke lampshades using a fabric of your choice.  You simply post the fabric to me, and I can create a beautiful lampshade to send back!  It’s a great way to use up excess fabric if you’ve made cushions or curtains, or just a way to ensure that you get a product that you really like.  So often, I find fabric that I love and just want to be able to use in some way – and now you can!

This particular project was one of my favourite bespoke projects.  This lovely customer contacted me on Etsy and posted her beautiful, bird patterned linen fabric – perfect for a lampshade.  I made a little 15cm table lamp fitting lampshade, which looked so sweet and dinky with her fabric choice. She then contacted me again, to ask if I could make cushions with the excess fabric…which was my pleasure!

I created two 40cm cushions with the remaining fabric, which perfectly complement her new 15cm table lampshade.  The cushion-making process is quite involved; there are many stages including overlocking the edges, and precise measurement is absolutely paramount! It’s vital to ensure that the lines of the cushion are as straight and crisp as possible. I make mine exactly to the size of the cushion (i.e. with a 40cm square inner, I match to a 40cm square outer) so that it has a nice and snug fit.
